Maloof Money Cup Draws Top Skaters With Biggest Contest Purse Ever

The skateboarding action was in full swing at the Maloof Money Cup with Shaun White, Ryan Sheckler, Andrew Reynolds, Bryan Herman and more bringing their A-game for a chance to take home a big check. It was a star-studded event with a live performance by Rev Theory, thousands of people in the etnies Festival Village and more energy than anyone could imagine.

The Maloof Money Cup is the premier showcase for professional skateboarding in 2008. This three-day festival, and WCS sanctioned U.S. Skateboarding Championship, will take place July 11-13, 2008 at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, California during the opening weekend of the OC Fair. Including three professional U.S. Championship Competitions – Men's and Women's Pro Street, and Men's Pro Vert – and the U.S. Amateur Championships, the Maloof Money Cup boasts the largest purse in the history of professional skateboarding with over $450,000 in prize money, while setting the benchmark at each prize level.

U.S. MEN'S PRO STREET SEMI-FINALS:

Saturday evening the Semi-Finals included 24 skaters: twelve qualifying skaters from Friday's preliminary competition joined 12 pre-qualified pros in the Semi-Final contest. Three heats of eight skaters each competed in two 10-minute jam sessions with a three-minute break between each session. It was a great show for the spectators as the pros fought to nail a qualifying spot for the finals, proving only that all the best action is yet to come. The top eight skaters advancing to the Finals are:

Saturday evening Vert Preliminaries included 20 skaters in two heats of ten. The contest's eight-ball format highlights shorter, more intense eight wall runs and a 45-minute jam session. The unique ramp set-up made for incredible skateboarding, and the competition between Shaun White and Pierre-Luc Gagnon was especially intense, with Gagnon squeaking into first place. The top 10 skaters advancing to the Finals are:

Young 14-year-old Carlos Lastra won the éS Game of SKATE Global Amateur Finals with a pop shuv-it-late-flip. The 5 international skateboarders and 19 domestic skaters were flown in courtesy of éS and Boost Mobile. Lastra hails from Long Beach, Calif., and qualified for the éS Game of SKATE at the Venice Beach éS Game of SKATE.

WORLD INDUSTRIES U.S. AMATEUR STREET CHAMPIONSHIPS:

The Saturday afternoon Finals included the final eight qualifying skaters from Friday's Prelims. Skaters were scored in two 10-minute jam sessions. The lowest score was thrown out and the remaining three scores were averaged for an overall score. The final result results are:

Skaters were judged on their overall impression during the contest. It was a great day for Brazilians across the world as two young Brazilian Ams took the top two spots in the contest.
