Is Ryan Sheckler A Sell Out?

Eighteen-year-old pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler is oftentimes ridiculed by his competitors for being a “sell out.” The undeniably gifted three-time Dew Cup winner, 2007 X Games Street Gold Medal winner and reality TV star has been accused of making street skating go pop. In the new issue of ESPN The Magazine, “Just Another Lonely Millionaire Skateboarder,” writer Allison Glock reports on Sheckler as he leads a pack of action athletes redefining stardom.

“Every time somebody calls me out or tries to start something, it’s motivation. I want to give them more reasons not to like me.” – Ryan Sheckler

“I have been doing tricks since I was 6 years old. I was focused and determined from that long ago. That’s why I am where I am.” – Ryan Sheckler

“Personally, I think skateboarding is harder than throwing a basketball in a hoop, so I’m all for it growing up and being taken seriously. Ryan is helping do that, and he gets hated on the hardest.” – Pro street skater Jereme Rogers

“Ryan is the first legitimate teenage heartthrob in our industry. People who watch him aren’t skateboarding fans, they’re Ryan Sheckler fans.” – Vert skater Andy Macdonald

The Sheckler piece is part of the The Magazine’s X Games preview – which also includes stories on Brian Deegan and his Metal Mulisha, BMX vert legend Kevin Robinson, and actions sports stars advice on how to survive when things at the X Games don’t go as planned.

Go to ESPNthemag.com for exclusive home video footage of BMX racer Donny Robinson dancing as a kid and behind the scenes video of the The Metal Mulisha photo shoot.

On hating the player..., RghtCst , 7/17/2008 1:03:49 PM
In the end, Ryan Sheckler is a phenomenal skateboarder. If he doesn't choose to play the role of the anti-establishment victim of society, choosing to profit from his talent instead of wallowing in the classic stereotype, the end result is he's still a good skater, and a millionaire. I don't know how many people wouldn't choose that. If it makes him less core than the pros who have turned down Nike contracts so they can skate the banks in Brooklyn while whining about it, and the people who pay attention to him aren't skaters anyway, then who cares? If these "core" skaters really wanted to be left alone they would keep their opinions to themselves and just skate.
What Does This Say About Skating?, Teen Beat Must Die , 7/17/2008 5:40:23 PM
Whatever sheckles want to do with his career is a-ok. I mean, whatever. Congrats on the big success and all that. But it irks me when all the kiddies see him and think this is all that skateboarding is about -- posing Teen Beat style. When did a skate deck become a fashion prop anyway????
RghtCst, tacky but... , 7/20/2008 9:28:25 PM
I, too, think his tattooing his name on his back and posing with the board is tacky and awful. People can't make assumptions on skateboarding based on one figure. There are other skateboarders-- Rob Dyrdek, for example, who are also cashing in via MTV. I wonder what people think about him? He has far more tact, so people are less apt to call him a sellout maybe? So you're a sellout if you do corny things with your mainstream fame?
