Ocean Minded Inc. Launches Longboard Team
Ocean Minded, Inc. is proud to announce the official launch of its longboard team, with the signing of Schuyler McFerran, Mikey DeTemple, Kai Sallas, and Christian Watch. These riders will compliment the brand’s original longboard athlete, Joe Aaron, who has been Ocean Minded’s sole longboarder for the last five years.
Aaron, 17 from Capo Beach California, is known for his mix of progressive and traditional styles on a longboard. He has a consistent competition record, including a recent May 30th win in Japan at the 2008 Nalu’s Surf Meet. Aaron is also an accomplished artist who is inspired by the bygone era of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.
Joining Aaron is the first ever Women’s World Longboard Champion, Schuyler McFerran. With an incredible passion for life and traveling, McFerran is a great addition to the Ocean Minded team of athletes. The 20 year old from Encinitas, California is an extremely versatile surfer that can ride anything from a fish to a traditional longboard, and is also an artist whose mediums include photography, painting, and sculpting. McFerran is a fierce competitor, whose smooth and graceful style makes her a candidate for this year’s world title which begins on July 11th in Biarritz, France.
"I am thrilled to be representing a company as solid and environmentally conscious as Ocean Minded. I love their products and their message that as surfers we have a responsibility to take care of our ocean. I’m stoked to be a part of the team and am looking forward to helping spread the Ocean Minded brand message,” stated McFerran.
Mikey DeTemple, 24 from Indian Harbour Beach, Florida, has also joined Ocean Minded. With a nomadic spirit and passionate attitude, DeTemple is usually traveling the world in search of perfect and empty waves, but partakes in competition, as well. Over Memorial Day weekend, DeTemple placed first in the Pro Division of the Steel Pier Contest held in Virginia Beach, VA
Another addition is Hawaiian Kai Sallas, who currently appears on the cover of the June 2008 issue of Longboard Magazine. Sallas, 27, unleashes true power and style in every event he competes in, which enabled him to win the first stop on the 2008 Professional Longboard Association (PLA) Tour in Mexico on May 30th.
“It’s really nice to be part of a company that is helping the environment and protecting the ocean,” said Sallas. “I really feel very strong about keeping our oceans clean, so Ocean Minded is a great match for me. I grew up in the ocean and it's a very important part of my everyday life. I try to do whatever I can on a daily basis, even if it's picking up a little bit of trash floating in the water or sitting on the beach, to be sure that the next generations will be able to enjoy it as I do.”
Completing the Ocean Minded longboard team is Christian Wach, 18 from San Clemente California. Wach’s talent, innovative style, and fresh personality are continuously showcased through his appearances in numerous surf related publications. In March, Wach won the Nose Riding Competition at the Noosa Festival in Australia, and continues to raise longboard performance levels whenever he enters the water.
“The addition of these longboard riders solidifies our team of athletes”, concluded Ocean Minded’s Marketing Director, Bob Tanner. “All of these riders bring more than just their surfing ability to the brand, and we are excited to have them as brand ambassadors”.
