I attended the SIMA/ BRA Boot Camp a couple of week’s back. What a great time. Great seminars, great connecting with old friends, great meeting new ones. I sat in on the seminars with the BRA retailers listening to Alan Roseman and Gregg Solomon. Such powerful information about merchandising plans and Open to Buy. One thing that stuck with me was a discussion Dick Baker, Chairman Emeritus of SIMA, had about the weather and its profound effect on our industry.
Truly, boardsports, resorts and the beach lifestyle industries are so entwined with the weather. One could argue like no other industry. We need wind to drive our swells, sails and kites, solar warmth to dry up our ramps and sidewalks and to make snaking behind a boat or winch more enjoyable. We need precipitation of the frozen kind in the winter to coat the slopes. Sun for resort towns, tan-seekers and shell collectors too. Right now… we need the Sun to ring our registers.
I’m on Facebook like many of you and the overwhelming status updates lately are all praise to the Sun when it’s out. The shining orb is dragging people out of their homes to enjoy a stroll in the park or sit on the beach and do nothing. The sun is driving people to your shops. Retailers in Florida and the Mid-Atlantic, up in the North East and now California are all dancing the sun-dance and the registers are responding. Optimism is suddenly reigning supreme.
Rain, rain, go away! Come again, well, much later.
Shameless plug: The Sun is in full effect in Orlando in August. Come and celebrate it as well as the best the industry has to offer at Surf Expo. The brother and sisterhood of the trade will be getting together for the future of our business. Help shape it and mold it and make it strong. You can either sit back and let things happen to you or step up and make things happen for you.
See you in August. It’s going to be a great show.
