Took a quick vacay last week with the fam. Yes… I know I let my readers down, sorry – ha! Had to help my daughter, Morgan, move out of her apartment at UNCC in Charlotte as she’ll be attending ECU in the fall (Go Pirates!). After schlepping her stuff around we headed to Wrightsville, NC for a few days of fun in the sun.
My wife, Theresa, and I grew up at the beach but my kids have not been that fortunate. We try to get them exposed to as much salt water and sand as possible, though. My son, Wesley, has surfed before but this was my daughter’s first time and they were psyched. To prepare for the trip we did a little shopping. Way out in Hiram, GA (near my ponderosa) is a little shop called Inland Board House. Really cool store - and we always try to support our local surf and skate stores. Owner Wayne Walsh wasn’t in but his staff took care of us with a couple of new leashes for our boards – the old reliable 9’0” WRV (a beautiful triple-stringer Keesecker noserider) and my son’s 6’2” Rusty (shaped by the man himself). Grabbed the 8’6” fun-board, packed it up and headed for the beach!
Down in Wrightsville we drove by Surf City Surf Shop, Sweetwater, Bert’s and the new 17th Street Surf Shop and stopped in for some look-see’s. The stores looked good and the kids were pumped.
You may take the day-to-day biz for granted but shops that keep stoking the fire of the boardsport industry – whether it be surf, skate, wake, wind – are what keep all of us going! The consumers live and breathe it; the manufactures vie for floor coverage. Thanks for all you do, seriously, to keep our sport real! Thanks for giving us the chance to enjoy the ocean, lakes and rivers in our way. Thanks for helping us support our lifestyles. If it wasn’t for you we’d all be wearing ties and only dashing to the beach for a tan.
See you in September!
