Jim Moriarty, executive director of Surfrider Foundation, rallies the largest crowd ever to attend a California Coastal Commission meeting. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the meeting drew more than 2,500 eager to discuss the proposed 241 toll road. The meeting was expected to last well into the night.
The RV's from Fox, Boost, Etnies, Billabong, Volcom, Hurley, and more helped shuttle protestors down to the Del Mar Fairgrounds, where the CCC meeting was held.
SIMA's Dick Baker, Ocean Minded's Gary Ward, ASR's Andy Tompkins, and man-of-the-hour Bog Mignogna, who was instrumental in getting the word out about the Save Trestles meeting.
Friends Of The Foothills, The Sierra Club, Surfrider Foundation, Wildcoast, and more were on hand to register attendees opposed to the proposed 241 Toll Road through San Onofre State Park. The lines were long, but the crowd was in a great mood.
The crowd at the pro-toll-road TCA booth were, well, pathetic really. Although the woman working there had nice leather boots, which I guess is something.

Cheyenne Jane Arnold and Mr. Chris Cote, esq.
The crowd files in.
Would you trust your Trestles with this man? Well, for most in the audience today, the answer was a resounding "No!"
Not to get all gushy, but it was really clear who the "good guys" were today -- and so obvious which group you'd want to hang out with. In fact, the crowd would have made any "wedding crasher" take notice.
While I couldn't get confirmation of this, most people I spoke with insisted that these Pro Toll Road demostrators were paid $25 dollars to attend. Looks like most of them could use a few more long walks down to Trestles to work off those guts.
Raise your hand if you're sure, and 2,000 arms go up.
PT's shirt says it all. It was very disappointing to see that the California Governor was so wrong on this topic.

sima and bra break bread at key retailer dinner

More than 115 retailers and surf-industry executives gathered January 10 at Orlando’s Ocean Aire restaurant for what was billed as a fun, no-agenda dinner. But the night became much more than that. Here's the crew from Lost, enjoying the evening.
According to industry veteran Peter “PT” Townend, “It was an incredible night with and incredible vibe—something you’d see down at a Surf Summit in Cabo.”
Quiksilver’s Dave Rosenberger and Marty Samuels with key retail partner Todd Roberts of ZJ Boarding House. Everybody happy?
“There aren’t a lot of opportunities for East Coast retailers to rub elbows with top industry leaders in a no-agenda environment,” says Board Retailers Association Executive Melissa Clary, who helped organize the event. Here Reef President John Wilson, Surf Expo’s Roy Turner, and Reef’s Marketing Veep Kevin Flanagan mug the camera.
Clary says feedback about the Retail Dinner has been overwhelmingly positive and plans are being discussed to slightly expand the night to include more retailers and manufacturers. Here is Quiksilver’s Tom Holbrook, Ron Jon’s Emma White-Prior, and Volcom’s Tom Ruiz.
Surf Expo's Sean O'Brien and Lori Kisner
Dee and Bobbie, two of the nicest (and skilled) retailers you'll ever meet.
The SIMA crew: New Communications Coordinator Mandy Johnson, Travis Wilkerson, and Jennifer Kelly.
Surf Expo's Nikki Houston and Kathy Wilkie with Sanuk's Jeff Kelley and James Crush.
Ezekiel’s Mike Martin, Bobbie Abdulfattah of Jack’s Surfboards, and Surf Expo’s Roy Turner.
