I am happy to report that for the last two months, I’ve had steady sales of booths. Many of the brands that we’re all familiar with are coming to the show. Along with the brands that are staples to the industry, newer brands are coming too. Why am I so happy about this? Shouldn’t they be coming because our show is the trade show for our industry?

The answer is yes! But I am happy because as we all know it was a rough start for this new year. The recession hit us all. Some were hit harder than others. Many shops and companies have gone out of business. That totally sucks and I pray that they are managing to get by.

But where there’s a problem, there is an opportunity. The shops that are still in business are taking up the slack from their neighboring shops that have gone. The same is true with the companies. We have lost a few this year. But, like the shops, the brands that are still in business will gain from the loss of a competitor.

My increase in booth sales comes from many factors. One, I believe, is the mindset that there’s an opportunity for my client’s business to grow. In order to grow they must show up to do business. The other reason is that if you’re in business and you don’t show up, then it might be a signal to the buyers that your brand is not doing so well. A perceived image like that can destroy a brand. Look at how quickly the sales of GM and Chrysler fell once the rumor that they were going out of business hit the news.

Whatever the reality, I am happy to say the sales are up. The exhibitors and brands you expect (and maybe some you’ve never seen before) are coming to our show. If you’re a manufacturer and you’ve not read Fish’s blogs, you’ll be happy to know that the buyers are coming too.

See you at the show.

Re: Why Things Are Looking Up

Hey, Doog,

Your article reminded me of an ad I saw back in the late 80's or early 90's in the Wall Street Journal. There was an economic downturn at the time, not as severe as today's, but enough that many companies were cutting back on there advertising, promotions and attendance at trade shows. The black and white ad showed a row of trees, all but one of which were bare of leaves. Naturally, the one full of leaves stood out. The point of the ad was that when everyone else is cutting back, if you stay the course and continue to do the things you were doing, your company will stand out and you will gain customers.

Coming up the 21st for the show. Interested in possibly attending the 11 a.m. seminar with Drew Brophy. What do I have to do to register for that and how much is it? I have a basic idea of airbrushing on my etched glass stuff, but always can learn more.

Hope to see you then.
