After a week of working at Surf Expo, a vacation is needed.
On Monday, the day after Surf Expo ended, my girlfriend Jen and I started our vacation together. This blog really is mostly about Jen’s fantastic time with me. I live a blessed life and I'm happy to share it with her. For her -- and to most people outside of our industry -- the day I'm about to describe would be a dream vacation.
We went to the Peabody to have breakfast and to watch the Duck March. The Peabody Hotels have a long-standing tradition of marching some ducks through the hotel, on red carpet, to a special fountain where the chill all day until they are marched back up to their private room in the hotel. We went their planning to just watch the parade. But we didn't blend in well with the overly dressed and elderly crowd that was forming. The Duck Marshall approached us and asked if Jen would like to the honorary Duck Marshal for the day. Of course, Jen agreed. She was taught how to direct and command the ducks with her special scepter. She was knighted and then escorted up the elevator to assist.
I have never seen the march, but I must say it's really a cool thing to watch. The ducks walked -- some ran -- down the red carpet while Jen guided them. They also had to walk up a ladder to get into the pool. It may sound cheezy, kooky, or lame -- maybe it is. I think it's okay to be different and like the simple, innocent things in life too. Everything about life doesn't have to be rad.
After receiving her diploma documenting her new royal position, Jen and took to the road. Our next stop was the Melbourne Art Museum. I had to deliver 20 Art Brewer prints that were borrowed from the museum and displayed at Surf Expo. When we were done delivering the prints, the museum’s curator turned on the lights to the museum. Jen and I were allowed to have our own private viewing of the entire Art Brewer photo collection. It's an amazing collection. It consisted of over 120 photos from several decades of surf photography. We were honored and thankful to see all them at our own leisure and privately.
The next stop was our final destination. The Long Point Campground which is one mile north of Sebastian Inlet. We pitched the tent, cooked some dogs and s'mores on the fire. We drank some wine and looked at the stars, talked, and fell deeper in love with each other. The night proved to be windier and colder than what my tent was rated for. Luckily we both scored some sweet swag from the show so we layered up and cuddled to stay warm.
The next day we went to the Inlet to surf. Jen has never surfed so we spent most of the time paddling and learning to respect the waves. The waves were maybe three foot, rough, and blown out. But the shorebreak was challenging enough for her. After several scary wipeouts and shoreline breathing breaks, I am happy to report that she did catch a wave. To hear her hoot when she caught it and to see her beaming smile really made me happy. She caught the stoke. She now not only wants to plan vacations together on the slopes, but surf trips have to be planned as well. To say the least, I am stoked that she is stoked.
Our time was running out because she had to catch a flight. There were two stops that had to be made. I took her to Dakine Diegos for some delicious tacos. She wanted to see what Ron Jon’s was all about.
After both stops we eventually and thankfully arrived at the airport in time. We sadly kissed and said our goodbyes and she was off.
Before she left she told me how lucky she was. She was going home with sea salt in her hair and the smell of campfire on her clothing. She surfed in the morning and would be at the slopes of Colorado by night. Most of all that she loved me and that she was happy to know that I love her too.
