One of my girlfriend’s friends passed away recently. He died in a way that personally scares me. He suffocated in the deep powder snow of Mt. Hood. He fell head first into a tree well.
I have fallen into a few tree wells and I know they can be scary when the powder is deep. They are very difficult to climb out of. The snow just keeps piling in on you. Plus being powder, there is nothing to get a footing on.
Please take this as a warning. Everyone must respect Nature. The most innocent and non assuming parts of nature can cause you harm.
Eric, you will be missed. God Bless you.
I was surprised to see that his passing made National news. Here is a video clip I saw on www.weather.com: http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid823425597/bclid877032950/bctid1357352042

| How's life in the ATL? Things out here are going very well. We have a ton of snow, it's rather deep in spots. I was checking out the surfexpo site last night and read some of your blogs. Particularly the one about the cat that died in the treewell, that's unfortunate. Not to mention something that can happen way too easily.
After reading that last night I found myself in a few treewells this afternoon, twice it was just trying to get out of some thick trees, but one time it was pretty sketchy. Huge high-speed frontside face shot-producing turn into front flip to upside-down treewell plunge. Obviously I made it out ok, but I was extremely conscious of what my fate could have been after reading that story. It will always be on my safety list, for sure.

(Officially this was an email sent to me from my friend Tim who now lives in Jackson Hole. I thought I would be a good thing to paste some of his email here as a comment- doog) |
