Several months ago my girlfriend Jen and I made plans for me to visit her during the holidays. She is a ski instructor for Copper Mtn. The holidays are the busiest time for the ski resort industry. Because it’s the busiest time, my visit would come at the worst time of the year for her. She would be too busy to hang with me during the day. She would be too tired to do much at night. For me, the costs of the trip would be higher than normal. The hotels double their rates. The resort would not discount tickets. We talked and she convinced me to postpone the trip.
After a few days of depression and thoughts about that postponed trip, I made a decision. The trip was not about just going to a ski resort. It was about being with my girlfriend during the holidays. I believe that the holidays are to be spent with the people you care the most about. It didn’t matter how much time I would spend with her. I missed her so much that just a few hours would be worth it for me. The costs would not matter either (although I did save money by taking the red-eye flights and I would be returning on Christmas Day). So without her knowledge I rescheduled a flight to Denver.
I had to make a plan though. I had to be sure I would see her. So I devised a plan and made her think that she would be receiving a special delivery. I did lead her into thinking that she might be visited by a singing telegram. Well, actually she feared that a group of midget elves were coming to see her. I had to promise that the surprise would not embarrass her.
On Sunday December 23rd I surprised her with her special gift: me! I met her at her ski school with a bouquet of roses in hand. The surprise worked. She was like a deer in headlights. She was shocked. We were both so happy to see each other.
We spent as much time as we could together. I took her to my favorite restaurant in Summit County. I watched her teach a group of five year olds how to ski. I witnessed there how great she is with kids. Later that evening I watched her perform in the torchlight parade.
That trip was very short in time but the value and memories are deep and will last for our lifetime.
