 An Action-Packed Weekend

For this blog, I'm going to inform you about some things that I enjoy. During one weekend I was able to experience several of those things.

To start the weekend of fun I went to the opening night for the Atlanta Thrashers. I'm a big hockey fan. I played hockey as a child on the pond in my backyard and for the High School team. I've been to numerous Red Wings games. I was an eight-year season ticket holder for the Grand Rapids Griffins (IHL). I also spent many evenings with friends watching games on TV.

Even though I don't think hockey belongs in the south, I'm happy that it's here. This Friday's game was a memorable one for the Thrashers. During the opening ceremonies they raised their banner for being the Southeast Division Champions. Unfortunately, they didn't play like champions that evening. They played like crap and were beat by the Washington Capitals.

The next morning I was up early and off to the races. I am a fan of fast, exotic cars. One of the most exciting races takes place just an hour north of Atlanta. The Petit Lemans race takes place at Road Atlanta. If you aren't familiar with the Lemans Race Series, it is a ten-hour or 1,000 mile endurance race. It's a true test of the drivers and the machines. They don't race in a boring oval track like NASCAR. The course winds up and down hills and through tight chicanes and S-turns. Another cool thing about the race series is that there are actually four races happening at the same time: two of the race classes are the modified (GT2) and slightly modified (GT1) production cars (Porches, Ferraris, Corvettes and others) and then the Le Mans Prototype cars.

The GT cars roar around the track at speeds over 100 mph -- which is really fast for a twisting race course. The Prototype (LMP) cars can reach speeds over 200 mph. It's very exciting to watch one of the faster LMP cars pass the "slower" GT cars. I spent the day with my friends walking through the woods and around the track to watch the race from different vantage points. It was a sunny day of drinking, plugging ears, watching, and low-impact walking exercise. By the end of the 10-hour race we were tired and went home to sleep.

When Sunday came around, I was starting to feel the abuse. Somehow I was able to get up and spend the day skating around my neighborhood.

There are plenty of good spots in Atlanta to skate. There are new parks and plenty of local secret spots. That day I just stuck to newly paved and hilly streets in my community. Later in the evening I was finally able to make contact with Doug Westin of Osiris. He was in town to hang with a good friend of his.

Cullen Poythress and his rad girlfriend picked me up and we went to meet Doug. Unfortunately, the planned meeting spot, The Clairmont, was closed on Sundays. So we hung across the street at The Local. Doug is a super-cool guy and anytime I do hang with him it's an honor. We didn't hang long, but promises were made for his return, so we could show him the legendary Clairmont lounge.
