ATL Surf Posse

I went to my first Atlanta Surf Posse meeting and I had a really good time. I don't want to sound as if I was surprised that I had a good time, I sort of knew I would. I was surprised by how quickly I felt like I was part of the group. I think that evening is just further proof that we are all part of the same tribe.

The Atlanta Surf Posse is comprised of 99 members. All of them come from beach towns from all over the world. They attend the meetings to talk and hang out with their peers -- or fellow tribesmen. I felt at home and felt an instant bond within the first five minutes. We all talked about recent trips, planned trips, our boards, the usual topics for any surfer at any given local surf hangout.

That evening only 16 members out of the 99 attended. This was great news for me, because I was elected to stand up and be the guest speaker. I found out this is not a common feature during the meetings. The reason I had to stand up and address the group was because of my position in the "Industry." Prior to the meeting I was apprehensive; I feared speaking to the whole group. I get that way not because I'm afraid to speak in public or to large groups. Actually I enjoy doing it. I was afraid because I had no warning and was not prepared. I like to be prepared for almost every occasion. (The boyscout within me). I ended up winging it and it turned out fine.

I have to mention that half the attendees where women. All of them were beautiful -- not just the normal, "You’re hot because you surf type of woman." I find that all women who surf are beautiful. These women could be contestants on America's next top model. For two of them, this was their first meeting too. They were really happy to join the group and meet other women to share stories with and plan trips.

The meeting lasted only four hours. It was cut short only because it was soon closing time for the bar. I left knowing that I made several new friends. I can't wait for the next meeting.
