Dakine Debuts Project Blue Recycled Surf Packs For Spring 2009

Dakine, the leader in action sports accessories, is proud to introduce two special edition project BLUE surf packs in its upcoming spring 2009 collection. Each gender-specific pack, the Oceana for girls and Recon for guys, is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles with partial proceeds benefiting The Surfrider Foundation.

“Our new project BLUE surf packs not only help raise awareness and support for The Surfrider Foundation, but the packs also incorporate recycled materials that would otherwise end up as waste in our landfills,” said Dave Bisset, Director of Product for DAKINE. “Protecting the environment is a priority for DAKINE; each season we look forward to expanding our use of recycled materials throughout the line.”

DAKINE has switched from PVC backing on packs and bags to more environmentally friendly Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) and Polyurethane (PU) waterproof backings. Other eco-initiatives include reduced packaging, bio-degradable recyclable plastic bags, post consumer paper hang tags and catalogs built using partial post consumer waste recycled paper and vegetable inks.

The Oceana and Recon feature a seam sealed wetsuit pocket, insulated cooler pocket and organizer pocket. Both bags are constructed with 100% Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) fabric and lining which is made from recycled plastic bottles. The packs also feature recycled buckles and use a non-toxic Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) waterproof fabric backing.

The Oceana, MSRP $75.00, and Recon, MSRP $70.00, will debut at retailers starting in January ’09. Two dollars from the sale of each pack will be donated to The Surfrider Foundation to help continue its mission of protecting and preserving our world’s oceans, waves and beaches.

DAKINE will launch its spring ’09 girl’s line, including the Oceana, at the Outdoor Retailer Show this August. The entire DAKINE spring collection can be previewed this September at Florida’s Surf Expo and at the Action Sports Retailer Show in San Diego, Calif.
