Don Brown To Receive Eric Stricker Memorial Award.

It gives TransWorld SKATEboarding great pleasure to announce this years’ recipient of the Eric Stricker Memorial Award to Don Brown, honoring him at the 14th Annual TWS Awards Presented by New Era on February 16, 2012 in Hollywood, CA.

Carlsbad, CA – The Eric Stricker Memorial Award, in memory of TWS editor Eric Stricker and awarded by TransWorld SKATEboarding’s editorial staff, sets out to honor individuals in the skateboarding industry who have shown a continued dedication to the positive growth, longevity, and love of skateboarding.

Growing up in Brighton, England, and picking up his first skateboard at the age of 11 changed Don’s life forever; things would never be the same. He left England at 18 with a one-way ticket to New York and never went back. He got his first big break in Texas through skateboarding legend Jeff Phillips. Eventually, he ended up homeless on the beach in Del Mar, California, hitting the park every day, until becoming fully sponsored on Sims and Vision. Brown started touring the States, winning contests, and make a living as a freestyle skateboarder, becoming world champion at Munster in ’89, and becoming the first-ever British skater to have a pro model on an American company.

When skateboarding took a turn toward street in the early ’90s, Don decided to call it a day and moved into marketing at Sole Tech, where he went on to cofound Altamont, Emerica, éS, Sheep, and ThirtyTwo. Not only has Don played a huge part developing skateboarding within the industry, he’s also chairman of the board at IASC and founder of the now world famous Go Skateboarding Day (June 21). “While his out-of-office antics have become the stuff of legend, it is his contribution to skateboarding that TransWorld SKATEboarding will be celebrating on February 16– just like the mods and rockers left London for a quiet weekend by the seaside all those years ago,” said TransWorld SKATEboarding Editor In Chief Skin Phillips.
