The Waterman League Opens World Headquarters at Turtle Bay Resort

League Prepares to Kick Off First Stand Up World Series World Championship Finals.

Posted 9/27/2012

Turtle Bay Resort, the only destination resort on Oahu’s fabled North Shore, is continuing its legacy as an epicenter for ocean sports as the new home of The Waterman League.

Situated along what is known as the “seven-mile miracle” – the stretch of Oahu’s North Shore between Haleiwa and Turtle Bay known for some of the world’s most epic beaches and surf – the 840-acre resort’s exclusive position provides the ideal home for the international ocean-sports organization.

The Waterman League has developed a multi-sport presence and is the official organizer of professional competition for the sport of stand-up paddlesurfing. The league’s Stand Up World Tour, the official world championship tour for stand-up paddlesurfing since 2009, kicks off each February a few miles from the resort at Sunset Beach, while the league’s inaugural Stand Up World Series World Championship Finals, held October 12-14, 2012, will be anchored at Turtle Bay Resort with a lineup of activities including surf demonstrations, awards presentations, a youth clinic and closing ceremony.

“Hawaii is the birthplace of surfing and stand-up paddling, so it was natural to select Turtle Bay Resort, an ocean-sports capital, as the global headquarters of The Waterman League” said Tristan Boxford, Waterman League CEO and fomer British and European windsurfing champion and ocean-sport athlete. “We are looking forward to welcoming the world’s premier ocean-sports athletes as the first Stand Up World Series comes to a close at the resort.”

With an office on the pool level of Turtle Bay, the resort will serve as the year-round home of The Waterman League’s event and media operations, promoting participation and producing events and media around the world. To celebrate this new partnership, Turtle Bay is giving away an all-inclusive trip for two including five nights at the resort, air fare and stand-up paddlesurfing gear rental. The deadline for entries is Dec. 15, 2012.

“Turtle Bay Resort is home to some of the most awe-inspiring ocean-sports conditions in the world, making our five miles of beachfront an ideal place for premier activities and events” said Marc Winchell, Turtle Bay Resort events manager. “In our 40 years on Oahu’s fabled North Shore, we have enthusiastically supported Hawaii’s waterman culture, and working closely with The Waterman League is a natural progression of that passion for enjoying and preserving our waters and coastline.”

With one of the most mesmerizing settings in the Hawaiian Islands, Turtle Bay Resort is the perfect place to take in the azure splendor of Kawela Bay, Turtle Bay and the windward view of the South Pacific. The resort provides an immense variety of ocean-sports programs and experiences for all generations and skill levels, and for the past 12 years, has served as home of the legendary Hans Hedemann Surf School. Every day the resort’s Surfer, The Bar – a partnership between Surfer magazine and Turtle Bay launched in November 2011 – celebrates the arts, music, film, fashion and history of the waterman. Turtle Bay also hosts numerous ocean-sports events, including activities related to the annual Vans Triple Crown Of Surfing.
