The market may be saturated with talk of heavy promotions and picky consumer buying behavior, but retailers enter 2024 upbeat.
Buyers came away from Surf Expo with exposure to plenty of newness from a floor dominated by a combination of smaller independents and emerging brands.
“Surf Expo’s always a little bit of both: you’re always going down there to shop your existing brands, but we also looked at a few of the new lines,” said New Hampshire-based Cinnamon Rainbows Surf Company owner Dave Cropper.
While Cropper met with existing brand partners such as Salty Crew, he also had a chance to peruse the lines of AVVA, Free Fly, Former Merchandise, and Rivvia Projects.

“It was amazing to be in Orlando with the Board Sports and Coastal Life communities in early January at Surf Expo,” said Surf Expo SVP and Show Director Roy Turner. “The tradeshow floor was buzzing with a positive vibe and optimism as brands presented new products to buyers for 2024. Surf Expo was able to connect buyers from the United States and abroad with a wide array of manufacturers across multiple categories all related to the beach lifestyle.”
The show, which featured hundreds of brands across the Surf, Bluewater, Shoreline, Boutique, Coastal Gift, Footwear, Paddle, Resort, Skate, Souvenir, and Swim categories, also included a busy lineup of events.

Elan Savir launched his namesake company for women’s clothing at Surf Expo in 1991, and he’s been coming back ever since. He can remember when he was 19 years old walking around the show floor, before he had his own company.
“Everybody in my circle either had a clothing store or had a clothing business,” Savir said. “Somebody brought me here. I was happy to be here. It was all the brands I used to love.” Not long after, Savir started his own brand.
Over the years, Elan has evolved. For the first 15 years, it was primarily beach resort fare. Now it’s more of an expanded boutique model.
Full Story »Quiet Storm, Sun Diego, Katin and Surf Expo Raise Money for Maui Sports Foundation
At Surf Expo, Quiet Flight and Sun Diego combined gave Ball $95,000 to the Maui Sports Foundation.
“I was blown away by Bill and Dave’s generosity, to sell that many T-shirts in such a short amount of time was unbelievable,” Ball said. “Mac Beau and Dale Rhodes from Katin also reached out to us, and what they did was so cool as well.”
Katin has been raising money for the Maui Sports Foundation by selling two special T-shirts, which to date has raised about $75,000, with 100% of the money going to the foundation.
In Orlando, Katin teamed up with Surf Expo to help sell the shirts at the show. Over the three days of the show, Surf Expo sold about 400 shirts and raised $12,000, according to Rhodes.
