Jack's Big Day Out

Before EPS or thrusters, before urethane skate wheels or even Gidget, there was Jack’s Surfboards. A cornerstone of the surf and skate industry since before the idea of “surf industry” was half baked, Jack’s is now more relevant than ever. Its location in downtown Huntington Beach is arguably the navel of the surf world. Its new store in Corona Del Mar showed just how far the concept of “surf retailing” has come. And with new locations in the works in Laguna Beach and other coastal spots, the Jack’s empire shows no signs of slacking.

So on this golden anniversary year, Jack’s is taking time out to celebrate and sincerely thank the industry with a huge private bash on the beaches of Huntington Beach during the U.S. Open of Surfing week.

So what do you get a retailer on its 50th birthday? If you are one of a select group of companies Jack’s does business with, you offer Limited Edition Collaborative products. Nixon, DVS, Billabong, O’Neill, and Quiksilver all have special black-and-gold items prominently displayed at all Jack’s locations. Special anniversary SMU items include Billabong’s Rising Sun Boardshorts, DVS’ Francisco Slippers, A gold and black The Lowdown SS watch from Nixon, Fortress Boardsports from Quiksilver, and Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Psycho 2 Zen Zip 3/2 fullsuit from O’Neill.

For the brands involved, the promotion was a no-brainer. “Anytime we can do something unique or one-of-a-kind for a store like Jack’s, we jump on it,” says Podium Distribuition President Kevin Dunlap. “Being that this SMU was to celebrate their 50th Anniversary, it was truly more exciting and special. Big props to Bobby, Ron and Jamal for holding it down for 50 years!”

Check out the highlights from the Jack's Walk Of Fame induction ceremony and gala banquet below:
